High in the Sky Prickly Poppies
The very next day (Sunday) I spent all my hours in the lab, and by evening I was begging to go outside. My lab was in the basement with no windows, and after six years in that environment it was starting to break me. During the late afternoon we went to my favorite running trail near my house and spent an hour outdoors.
I no longer had the energy to stand, so I sat for this sketch. There were some poppies nearby that looked almost perfect in form, flawless in their way. I sketched them for about thirty minutes, not overthinking, just trying to capture the feeling of looking slightly upward toward the sky where they grew. Of course I wished for more time, but the drawing reflects what I felt then. I wish I had a lot more time to sketch them, but looking back I think it was made by someone who wanted to be free.
