These works are based on real places, but they are not direct translations of what was seen. They come from spending more time in a location and choosing what mattered most while I was there. In some cases, that might be the temperature of the air, like standing in cold shadow while sunlit rock holds its warmth. In others, it is the depth of space, where distant canyons are given more attention instead of being reduced to a suggestion, or the movement of grass that feels dense enough to tangle around you. Each painting holds onto a specific part of the experience and builds the scene around it.
