Main Hill Mesa

I have been on a mission to challenge myself with sketches during golden hour. On this day it was not planned, but an above-average cloud display and a rainbow over the mesa in Los Alamos sent me racing down the trail with a lawn chair and art supplies in hand. I knew the light would not last long.

I worked as quickly as I could to capture the vibrant colors of the mesa. Realizing I could not sketch fast enough with pen, I focused on blocking in color shapes and added pen details after the sun had set. I learned this may be the best strategy for moments when the light fades quickly. While I loved the rainbow, there was no time to capture it, so I simply enjoyed it instead.

Micron pen and watercolor on paper. About 20 min. sketch.
